Today, the Getty Museum sent out this tweet:

Getty Center is closed the rest of the day due to brushfire. LAFD is on the scene.

They also followed up to say that everything was OK and that the evacuation was just precautionary. Yay!

Here’s a reminder that the Getty is on the Flickr Commons, and that you can take a tour of their holdings by visiting them online.

Their set Postcards of Algiers, a Virtual Tour is one of my favorites, and could use some tags and comments from viewers. These postcards are featured in the exhibition Walls of Algiers: Narratives of the City (through October 18, 2009, at the GRI).

Happy 4th of July to the United States of America!

This is a national holiday for the US, celebrating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence — a great day for BBQs, picnics, baseball, and, of course, fireworks. Of this occasion, President John Adams stated,

The second day of July, 1776, will be the most memorable epoch in the history of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forever more.
