Party time! On 16 January 2008, the first collections were uploaded to the new Flickr Commons by the Library of Congress–so that makes the Flickr Commons project five years old today. Of course the Library of Congress is celebrating their five years, but many other Commons institutions are also joining in on the fun. Here’s a roundup:

On Flickr:
Library of Congress, “Celebrating: 5 Years Flickr Commons-a set on Flickr”
Library of Congress, “Flickr Favorites 1″ (a gallery of favorite images from across the Commons)
Library of Congress, “Flickr Favorites 2″ (another gallery)
Library of Congress, “Flickr Favorites 3″ (another gallery)
Library of Congress, “Flickr Favorites 4″ (another gallery)

State Library of Queensland, “Happy 5th Birthday Flickr Commons-a set on Flickr” (a very clever collection of images of five people, objects, etc.)
Nationaal Archief, “Feestje/Party-a set on Flickr”

Faces of the First World War

Lieutenant William Murray Dobie
Imperial War Museum

As part of the First World War Centenary observances, the Imperial War Museum is adding “Faces of the First World War” to their Flickr Commons account. The portraits sometimes start with just a surname and a rank; but many of them are gaining extensive annotation in comments, with contributors accessing war records, census details, maps, and baptismal rolls, as well as the lists of names on monuments of war dead. In the Commons, a young face like Lt. Dobie, above, becomes a doctor’s son, Elizabeth Dobie’s older brother, a Marlborough School student, just twenty years old when he “went out to inspect the wire in front of the fire trench,” and died.

New faces will be added to these sets regularly until August 2014, the 100th anniversary of the start of World War I.
