August 26: Women’s Equality Day

Posted by Penny in Across The Commons

On August 26, 1920, the 19th Amendment to the US Constitution was ratified, recognizing the right of women to vote. In 1971, Congress passed a resolution declaring August 26 “Women’s Equality Day.” Flickr Commons collections are full of photographs of the American suffrage movement. Here are just a few for the day…

We’re always interested in seeing what people are doing with Commons photos. And we are, obviously, big fans of archivists of all kinds. So what could be better than a note drawing our attention to Commons-based comics for archivists?

If you don’t already know Rebecca Goldman’s Derangement and Description, head over and check it out! And start with those photocomics, for which Rebecca uses Commons material much of the time.

I grew up in this house! From when I was a baby in 1977 to about 5 years ago. It’s one of the most beautiful houses in all Toowoomba …

Thanks to Pixel Wrangler for noticing this one, and bringing it to the Flickr Commons group’s Personal Connections thread!

The Tracksons and Captain McFarlain, Restored

Restoration of Commons photos was the subject of a recent discussion in the Flickr Commons group. Here’s a restoration of a Commons photo by a Flickr user that has turned up since then in the group pool. We’re sure there must be more users out there restoring Commons photographs and cleaning up old scans!
