New to The Commons: Jewish Women’s Archive

Posted by zyrcster in News

A hearty welcome to the Jewish Women’s Archive! They join the Commons on Flickr with 3 fabulous sets depicting the history of American Jewish women in service, in World War II and in the greater Hartford, Connecticut community.

The most unique thing about the Jewish Women’s Archive is that they are a virtual archive!

The Jewish Women’s Archive is not a physical repository. Instead, we use our website (jwa.org) to provide access to a wide variety of resources, including many primary sources, which tell the stories of Jewish women in North America.

Now they can also harness the power of the Flickr Commons to provide such access. Hoorah!

After Kristallnacht, my grandmother went to Brazil and then we sponsored her to come here. It was difficult at the beginning for me. School was difficult, language was hard. But we graduated at 16. My father had problems with the language. My grandmother was more educated then any of us. She went to boarding school – fluent in English and French.

New to the Commons: The Galt Museum & Archives

A big welcome to the Commons to the Galt Museum & Archives!

From the city of Lethbridge in southwestern Alberta, where the Canadian prairie starts thinking about the mountains, the Galt Museum & Archives brings to Flickr’s Commons a wealth of regional industry, history, and people; a healthy dose of Canadian, including the precursors to the Mounties; a good sense of humour (with a u); and their own staff favourites. (If you go hunting, you’ll find hockey and beer, too, just in time for the new season!)

Check out the Galt Museum in the Commons, and before you know it you too will be “Alberta Bound.”

We welcome to the Commons the Getty Research Institute! The Getty brings to the Flickr Commons, to start, from “a Photo Study Collection comprised of approximately two million study photographs of art and architecture from antiquity through the 20th-century”, photographic postcards of Algiers in the early 20th century — postcards whose stamps tell of real journeys as well as those across time:

Cymru am byth!

We warmly welcome The National Library of Wales to the Flickr Commons! Established in 1907 and now with over 800,000 photographs preserving the heritage and culture of Wales, they start their Commons adventure with 100 photographs from the P B Abery collection, photographs taken between 1890 and 1940 in Radnorshire, the border area of Wales and England.

We can’t say it better than they do, so to quote them …

As you’ll see the photos include the weird and wonderful – including turkeys blocking the road and a dog smoking a pipe!

New to The Commons: The Field Museum Library

Posted by zyrcster in News

The Field Museum Library is now on the Flickr Commons, with stellar images of Chicago and Illinois and dinosaurs!

The Field Museum Library’s collections began in 1894 with the libraries of the World’s Columbian Exposition of 1893. Their collection includes images of Anthropology, Botany, Geology, and Zoology, as well as documents the history and architecture of the Museum, its exhibitions, staff and scientific expeditions.

I’m an American West history buff, so I was delighted find some of noted photographer William Henry Jackson’s work from the 1893 World’s Columbian Expo in this collection. It turns out that Marshall Field commissioned Jackson to travel the world photographing specimens for the new museum. Cheers to that, and welcome to the Commons!
